Tacheles at Berlin
is a development at a site in Berlin with artist/ squatters in an existing building. The project leaves the existing artist's compound as is and adds a retail/office building and public park on the site. The old and the new will co-exist: conflict and connection, art and commerce, memory and renewal- uneasy neighbors. All design, 3-D modeling, rendering and illustrations by Emily Basham.
Site Plan. Tacheles, a 19th century building fragment, is on the left with the red dot. The existing dirt drive will become a paved road through the site. The new development leaves the artists' side of the site undeveloped.
Ground Floor and Typical Floor Plans. The wing of glazed curtainwall facing the square bowls outward to the plaza and bends towards Oranienburger to create a backdrop for the new public plaza/urban park. The wing facing Johannisstrasse is granite masonry skin maintaining the streetwall.
Roof Floor Plan and Section. The building opens up to allow substantial natural light throughout the building. The space is designed to allow for collborative spaces and impromptu meetings.

View of the atrium. Commercial enterprises such as restaurants will be adjacent to the plaza, and retail businesses on the opposite side of the atrium will be adjacent to the public street.
